I keep getting hideous-looking night shots with my sony cybershot. I think one can imagine this scene would have been beautiful if it wasn't so grainy. I know it's possible to get decent night shots with sony cybershots, because I've seen them on other sites, Any Suggestions? This is getting frustrating. Up-ing the exposure doesn't cut it.

I sometimes like grainy shots. But if you want to avoid the visible grain, you could shoot with a lower iso value. This would of course result in a longer exposure time and you might want to use a tripod.

Depending on the overall effect you are trying to achieve, the longer the exposure the better. Play around with the camera on manual setting. Change the aperture. Available light makes a big difference. I have some shots that are less than 2 seconds and some that are more than 30 seconds. Take several photos at different settings. Make notes while you are testing. Practice makes perfect!

@Jeff M: Thanks a lot for the advice! I'm working on it. I think my point and shoot has some limits to what can be controlled manually. Maybe I should invest in a tripod. Thanks again!
