Nice shot, though for my tastes the composition is a little bland. I'd also like to see a less blown out sky. Have you ever been to Daily Dose of Imagery? The photographer there (Sam) does some amazing stuff to balance his skies out with the ground, oftentimes using a photoshop b&w channel mixed layer overlayed onto the color image. I think there's a tutorial somewhere on his site where he talks about that. That might keep the sky a little darker. Maybe also playing with the curves a bit.

@Justin Haaheim: Thanks Justin! I'll definitely look it up. I have a lot of trouble with skies. I tried darkening just the sky with levels/curves but then i ended up with these really weird colors. thanks again!

Nikon Capture NX uses something called U points that allow you to make quick and easy changes to local areas of an image, like skies, without affecting the rest of the image. You might check out this QT tutorial on U points.

@Twelvebit: thanks, Twelvebit. i actually recently learned how to make quick and easy changes to local areas with photoshop's quick mask but now the problem is figuring out which changes to make -- especially with skies, if i darken too much with levels or curves i end up getting really weird extreme colors.

You might benefit by checking out that Nikon site and looking at the tutorials --especially #2-- and maybe downloading a trial copy. No masking is required in NX, you put a control point (or any number of points) on your image and it allows you to change about ten different elements, like brightness, contrast, saturation, and even color. No masking is required. For instance, if you drop a point in a sky, the software analyzes the point and knows that you only want to make adjustments to the sky --and the blending algorithms make transitions very smooth. It's way faster and easier than even quick masking, and very versatile. Look at that #2 QT tutorial and you'll get a better idea of how powerful this tool is than from any explanation I can give.
