minimalistic shot, i love the contrast too, it also leaves one guessing whether this was taken during a sunrise or a sunset.

@mortola: thanks mortola. it was a sunset.
very good sunset, nice tones and framing, minimalistic.

@pedro alexandre: thanks pedro! i need to work on getting a less "minimalistic" sunset, but this is a start.

something about the gradient and solid colour greatly appeal to me. Even the mild barrel distortion ads a unique element... very nice.

@shrimpehad: thanks! i had to look up 'barrel distortion' so i learned something new -- apparently it's "Image distortion produced when the position of the camera lens is at its widest angle." wasn't actually on purpose (i'm not really sure i even know how to recognize it yet) and i just used my regular point & shoot lens, not a wide angle one. but i'm glad you like it.
This is a beautiful sunrise/set. Since you asked about suggestions on today's image - I thought I would mention something on this photograph.
Everything in photography is subjective, but you might want to see if tweaking this beautiful image appeals to you a little more.
The blue sky transitioning to the golden light at the horizon could be boosted a tad more with a slight bump in the saturation through either photoshop/elements. Too much and it would not look realistic.
Anyway, food for thought.
