EARLY SPRING FLOWERS SERIES 12 of 16 -- this series is likely to be interrupted on various days. (these are all from 2008)
WINNER OF THE DAY: In an upset it's Howard F. who says they are Saucer Magnolias. Thanks a lot to Viewfinder, who identified these as Japanese Magnolias. Also many thanks to Sherri, who said it's a tulip tree. If you have any other information or suggestions please let me know. Thanks!
first person who can correctly tell me what kind of flower this is wins (a thank you and a link to your blog is the best i can do for a prize). i don't know the answer (horrible with flower names) which is why i would like to find out.
from looking at some of your blogs i can tell that not everyone is so fortunate to have flowers blooming in their parts of the world now and many are itching for spring time, so i decided to walk around and photograph different flowers. i haven't had a chance to do much of any processing on these aside from a few minutes in picasa. hope you enjoy them!
any tips on photographing flowers? composition is especially much harder than it looks in nature and i already noticed some of the bright reds seem to get a sort of glare on them and some of the lighter ones got washed out. apologies in advance if some of them didn't come out very sharp, etc. there are some i might normally have thrown out but i also wanted to find out what these different flowers are called.
Comments, feedback, criticism, suggestions, etc. are always appreciated. Thanks! Image too large? Click the 'small' link in the bottom right corner for a smaller view.

Here's my guess: beautiful flowers . . .? A flower by any other name, and so on. I like the composition on this one quite a bit, and the colors are lovely.

@Stunner: thanks a lot!
nice composition, I like the magnolia shapes and the tonal, but the ground is a little bit distracting from my point of view.

@Pouhou: thanks. i completely agree about the ground. but i wasn't sure what to do about it. any ideas?
The magnolia blossom is so fleeting . . like the poor things have been building up to this one big moment and it is all over in a few days. Magnificent image.

love the colors, very nice indeed and the angle in which you took this photo very well executed.

These are "Saucer Magnolia"- magnolia x. soulangeana, I got one of these in my yard and they're beautiful around this time, but makes a bit of mess after the blooms have died out.

@Howard F.: Thanks a lot, Howard! Do you know any more of the flowers?
Ooh, dramatic perspective. I like. Too late for the contest, I guess.
