EARLY SPRING FLOWERS SERIES 16 of 16 -- this is the end of the series, i'll have some more flower shots occasionally though. this photo was taken in a different location than the others in the series. (these are all from 2008)
WINNER OF THE DAY: MaryB, who identified this as a wild iris. I found a photo confirming this ID here. Thanks a lot, Mary! Thanks also to Barbara for confirming the ID and sharing her photo of this type of iris.
Also, Many Thanks to everyone who's identified, or offered a guess, or commented, or visited the photos of flowers in this series. Thank you!
first person who can correctly tell me what kind of flower this is wins (a thank you and a link to your blog is the best i can do for a prize). i don't know the answer (horrible with flower names) which is why i would like to find out.
from looking at some of your blogs i can tell that not everyone is so fortunate to have flowers blooming in their parts of the world now and many are itching for spring time, so i decided to walk around and photograph different flowers. hope you enjoy them!
any tips on photographing flowers? composition is especially much harder than it looks in nature and i already noticed some of the bright reds seem to get a sort of glare on them and some of the lighter ones got washed out.
Comments, feedback, criticism, suggestions, etc. are always appreciated. Thanks! Image too large? Click the 'small' link in the bottom right corner for a smaller view.

@Rags: thank you!
Excellent! I love how you've handled the highlight detail!
31 Mar 2008 3:35am
@Craig: Thanks a lot! that was the thing I was most worried about in the processing, the rest of it on this for once i actually pretty much knew what i wanted to do. but i ended up getting out some of the detail in the highlights with a couple levels adjustments.
Beautiful shot.... Cheers!

@Shazeen Samad: thank you very very much!
A strange flower,but it has many number '3' :)

@mckun: you're right. i hadn't noticed. it does have a lot of patterns of threes.

@Melissa W.: thank you!
Someone may have won already but I say it is an Iris, just like this one: http://barbaraann.aminus3.com/image/2008-03-14.html Beautiful capture you have. I agree with your comment on photographing flowers. All I can say is practice, take many photos until you feel you have it right.
31 Mar 2008 10:52am
@Barbara: thanks a lot for your kind comment and help identifying the flower! also thanks for the advice. someone pointed out to me that flower photography is a complicated whole sub area of photography -- i'm not sure i have the patience for all of that, but i think you're right about the practice, and then maybe once in a while i'll get lucky with a nice capture :)
very nice macro

@Dara: thanks Dara!
Beautiful color and detail in that flower ... it's a beauty! See you had to crank the ISO up ... your nice, soft DOF conceals the noise in the shadows fairly well. Did you run your noise reduction routine on this one?
31 Mar 2008 2:31pm
@Ron: Thanks a lot, Ron! I actually didn't use the noise reduction technique here -- it didn't end up extremely noisy to begin with. guess i got lucky in that respect. I didn't actually 'crank' the ISO up, the camera did, I'm guessing 'cause I took this in the evening. most of my photos are taken in purely automatic settings (i think here i probably just set it to macro mode) -- meaning most of the time I don't even change the few settings my camera does allow me to control.
Superb composition. I love the colours. I have really enjoyed your series!

@standley: thanks standley! i really appreciate your kind comments.
bonne DOF qui isole bien le sujet. Cadrage un peu trop large peut-être
31 Mar 2008 5:17pm
@lasiate: the online free translator says you said: "good DOF which isolates subject well. Too broad framing perhaps." Thanks. the framing was something i wasn't sure about, especially since aminus3 resizes images down so wide shots are less macro on the screen, but i just ended up going with this. thanks again!
Very beautiful image. I like the background which makes it look almost like selective color.
31 Mar 2008 5:27pm
@Oswegan: thanks a lot! i actually just desaturated the colors in the background some, except i brought out the greens again.
Beautifully processed.

@sherri: thank you, Sherri!
That is a gorgeously delicate looking flower. Nice job.

Like how you coloured this.
31 Mar 2008 8:33pm
Fantastic shot of this beautiful flower!
31 Mar 2008 8:47pm
Wow. How about that for color and clarity!

This has been an intriguing - and, ultimately, informative - series and has also shown up how little most of us know of the natural world around us. You did a great job here and this is a joyful little flower at the close.

You have me thinking Georgia O'Keeffe with this one.

beautiful shot of the iris, danthro - I really like the depth of field, composition and colours. It gives the sense of spring rising from the cold dead winter earth.
(sorry I haven't been visiting recently. work seems to be 24/7 since our last trip: this is my first visit to aminus3 in over a month. will try to get back into looking at your blog regularly, even if I can't get out to capture shots myself)

@baobab: no worries at all baobab. but thanks for your kind comment!
