processing feedback would be extra-specially appreciated today... thanks.

a big problem i have is figuring out what to do once i have selections of different parts of a photo i want to process differently in photoshop -- so that i don't get halos around the edges of selections.

sorry i'm not able to catch up on everyone's blogs as i'd like to, focusing on other pursuits more now.

Wow ... this is a beauty! The composition ... the color ... and those funky, photogenic trees all work together beautifully in this shot. In Photoshop have you tried using layer masks (and feathering the edges of your selection) to isolate the processing?

I like the photo a lot, but I'll go ahead and give you some criticism since you asked. Overall it seems a bit dark to me, the light appears to be really nice though so I'm not sure what you are using to initially process with. There is a lot of flexibility if you shoot raw and then do your initial exposure corrections in Adobe Camera Raw or in Lightroom before you take the image into Photoshop. There are some great books that explain how to use these tools, if you email me I can get you some titles. Regarding your selections, there is a tool called "refine edge" that works pretty well within Photoshop, but for me, instead of trying to make complicated selections, I like to create my desired effect in an overlay layer and then fill it with black and use a soft edge paint brush to paint the effect back into the image a little at a time. It would take too much time to explain the process here, but again, I can reccomend some resources if you send an email. Cheers, I love the composition of this shot, though it seems a bit Freudian.

@Florence: sure. i actually just came up on it and went to see the photo. This was actually not a night shot originally, but i'm very flattered that i pulled off the photoshopping well enough to fool you :) still don't have a tripod.

But where is it ! It is actually a quite close replica of an Italian campanile, only the clock is completelu out of tune. I have been fooled one minute ! Nice treatment, makes a strange night atmosphere. Fine !

Bold of you to keep it dark in spite of the inevitable criticism that it's "too dark." An image is only "too dark" if it fails to render some detail you want to show --or the particular logic of that image dictates should be shown. Obviously, you can't create a night mood with daylight lighting. You're doing in Photoshop what Hollywood calls shooting day for night (where the lens is stopped down to simulate night). I use the control points in Nikon Capture NX as a shortcut for masking to get the kind of effects you used here.
