That's an uncommon and interesting way for composing the image, the bridge following a small diagonal in the left downside. In fact, that makes sense, because it seems that one has to turn right after the bridge to enter the house.

@Melissa W.: thanks a lot! i've been enjoying it too, well except for the parts that take a ton of time. more like, i've enjoyed some of the results. i owe a lot of thanks to Kevin Falk of organicpix.com for telling me about the shadow/highlight tool in photoshop :)

@Lunamania: Thanks, that's very nice of you! I basically have the following layers in photoshop, though i didn't make them in this order: 1) sharpened; 2) did a shadow/highlight adjustment (I don't have the numbers for exactly what the adjustment does and don't know if it's possible to find it); 3) vignette; 4) sharpened image with a gaussian blur set to the 'multiply' blending mode at 33% opacity; 5) selective color layer; 6) levels layer. then i took that result and did some basic tonal adjustments and desaturation in picasa.

This is a beautifully composed picture. Love the framing with the trees and the wooden bridge leads you into this lovely landscape. Great tones and details too. Nice work on this image!

Nice aging. And that shadow/highlight tool is invaluable. You can do the same thing by manipulating curves, but the tool is much easier. I doubt there is any other tool I use more.
