untitled elementary school closing 7

went to see someone who lives near an elementary school i attended. he mentioned it's being closed so i decided to take some photos for a series...

this structure they have up for shade wasn't around when i was a student; i'm not entirely sure what it looked like but i think there were some old wooden benches and a grassy area where i would sit at lunch with fellow members of the 'slow eaters club'--though we weren't supposed to tell what 'SEC' stood for ;)
...that fence on the right wasn't there either, it appears they added it around the part of the school that housed the lower grades (K-2 i think)--there's a sign up on the side of the fence facing the playground that says 'PLEASE Close Gate for the Safety of the Children. Thanks.' the children seemed to do perfectly fine without being fenced in when i was there.

sorry i'm not able to catch up on everyone's blogs as i'd like to, focusing on other pursuits more now.

You guys got to eat outside for lunch?! Yeah, that was unheard of at my elementary school. We ate in the gym/auditorium. SEC? I'd never fit in that club. They say that being a slow eater is actually better for you.

Gotta say, these elementary school images have really made me think about my school days. I haven't been back to my old elementary school since I graduated from high school.

BTW, great image...(sorry I got sidetracked) Are blue and gold the school's colors? It seems to be everywhere...at least on the doors and flags.

@Melissa W.: thanks a lot. i don't know if they've changed the colors or anything, but when i was there it was blue and white.

Hey, just surprised there's no concertina wire topping the fence yet. When I was in high school, we actually drove over to South Padre Island for lunch, before there was a causeway, and sometimes were late getting back because we got stuck by the swing bridge. There were no fences of any kind. You didn't need a permission slip to be out of class. People went surfing in the afternoon. We brought our latest hunting rifles and shotguns to school to show our friends. We made gunpowder in science class. We launched model rockets during the lunch hour. No one got kicked out of school for taking aspirin or Tylenol when they had a headache, or for having a knife or gun in their car/truck in the school parking lot. There were no narcs on campus, no locker searches, no drug sniffing dogs, and no metal detectors (though this last part was already changing where I used to live in California before moving to Texas). But hey, that was all back before the new "freedom."

I remember we had a photography club at my elementary school, which provided cameras for us to walk around the buildings and playground to take photos. I wonder how different our point of view was as kids.

Anyways, I love the series! Very cool!

The blue shaded shapes appear to be 'sails' in the sky - really like the geometrical appeal of this photograph triangles / rectangles of the tables and how not being fenced in is a good thing!
